Home design priorities changing as owners age in place
The 55-plus market segment accounts for the largest percentage of homeownership and as a result is the driving force behind continued changes to the home design industry. Historically, this influential market segment has prioritized spending on updated kitchen and bathroom design. Now, in the wake of COVID-19, the priorities have shifted. While this segment still desires updated appliances, open kitchen floor plans and spacious bathroom suites, their focus is now on the ability to age in place and what they will need twenty years from now. As a result, communities and developers looking to attract these buyers will need to adapt their homeplans and marketing to emphasize home features that enhance overall accessibilty features, such as curbless showers, in order to remain competitive in the market.
