GEORGETOWN, SC Georgetown County’s tourism group has selected a Charleston-based marketing and PR agency to run the county’s advertising campaigns and bring more visitors to the area, the chairwoman of the group said Tuesday.

The Georgetown County Tourism Management Commission, which was created in 2008, selected Rawle Murdy, which has previously worked with resorts and with the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Helen Benso, the chairwoman of the commission, said the tourism group will spend roughly $500,000 over the next year with Rawle Murdy.

“Being in between two large major tourist destinations, Myrtle Beach being one of them and then Charleston in the south being another, we are kind of the hidden jewel,” she said. “The challenge is to find our identity and promote that new identity.”

The commission previously contracted with White+Partners, based in Virginia, which redesigned the commission’s Web site. Benso said the commission wanted to contract with a closer agency.

Benso also said the commission was impressed that the agency could provide advertising, PR and Web management services.
