What’s a CES, and why should I care?

By: Amy Catherine Bennett Coats | Posted on

It’s that time of year again: time for the annual CES conference. What’s CES, you ask? Why the Consumer Electronics Show, of course!

CES is the annual meeting of the world’s geeks. Much like Super Friends, Justice League or Planeteers, when our geek powers combine, we are super-awesome (that’s a technical term). During CES, new devices launch and advancements in all the fantastic tech. Goodies that enrich our lives come into the world.

I’ll hop down from my geek box now. CES is great and all, but what does it have to do with advertising?

Want to know what gizmo all your consumers will be playing with in the next year or two? Follow CES.

Want to see how media is changing and what the future of websites, tablets and smart phones is? Follow CES.

Don’t wait for the new Gizmo to hit the newspaper or CNN six months from now (when all your customers are already standing in line to buy it). Know what’s coming.

Don’t hop on your website analytics one day and say, Where did all my Windows XP users go? Does my website work on the iPad3? And what is this other device where my users are now coming from?

Don’t be surprised. CES is basically an advertisers Farmer’s Almanac for technology. Know what’s coming, so you can plan how to best spend your marketing dollars.
