Android vs. Apple: Tales of a Mobile Civil War
The battle between Google and Apple has been well documented. Steve Jobs made it one of his dying wishes to “go to thermonuclear war” with Android. This battle between two business titans, has started to hit the home front.
While it hasn’t escalated to the point of anyone scrawling “iOS Go Home”, on your local Apple Store, the tension is there. My husband is a self-professed computer geek (he writes software as a hobby and if anyone deserves their Geek card, it’s him). Right now, he sits at home working on an over clocked computer he built from scratch. Sitting next to him…an Android.
If you were to ask him “Android or iPhone”, he would laugh at you and reply “why would anyone want an iPhone?” There is a long list of reasons that I have heard over and over and over again.
“Why would you pay for apps you can get for free?”
“iTunes is the most poorly written piece of software I’ve ever seen.”
“What! No 4G…how far behind are they?!”
“Yadda Yadda Yadda. Java is better than Objective-C.”
If there was a line in the sand. I would be standing on the other side.
Give me that, sleek user experience. Let that puppy sync with my other devices. Let it already know who all my contacts are. Let it automatically add my huge music library.
“Why yes iPhone, I did just add that app to the iPad. Thank you for noticing.”
“Oh dear, Apple Store Genius Bar, I seem to have a problem, can you fix it?”
Great UX and customer service go a long way in my book.
I will be the first to admit, Apple has a habit of not being on the cutting edge of adapting new hardware (no ranting fan boys, you know it’s true). If you want the cutting edge, latest and greatest, super cool, “Hey check out this cool thing my phone does,” odds are you need to skip the iPhone. The open source software of Android really gives you a lot more options for experimenting and innovating. 3D cameras, the fastest mobile broadband and high res digital cameras all hit the Android market first.
Looks like the battle between Apple and Android is just an extension of the old Mac vs. PC war. Which side do you choose?
